Art Therapy

Art therapy combines psychotherapy and creative processes such as using paint, clay, drawing, collages, mask making and much more to assist people in improving their emotional, cognative and physical well being. This can be facilitated by trained art therapists or psychotherapists who use creative modalities in their work.

The creative process itself is theraputic and the therapist helps guide and create a safe space to make art and explore your internal state. Through artwork and discussions, clients can explore nonverbal messages, symbols and metaphors to have a deeper understanding of themselves. The goal is not to create a "masterpiece" but rather enjoy the process of creating art.

Initial sessions can focus on getting to know a client, any intake forms that need to be completed, mental health history and goal setting. A typical session for an adult or child includes a check-in on what has happened since last being seen, having a set structured piece to create or unstructured and free flowing. Through guided discussions, the session ends with a transition piece to facilitate a closing ritual. The therapist may talk or be silent during your creative process to facilitate a safe atmosphere.
