Psychotherapy, formally known as talk therapy, involves a mental health professional who can use psychological methods and modalities such as Person-Centered, Solution Focused, Cognative Behavioural Therapy and much more to help individuals, families and groups address their issues, concerns, emotions, thoughts and behaviours that affect their lives.
It is a collaborative process that aims to foster trust, self-understanding, coping tools and promote healing.
Initial sessions can focus on getting to know a client, any intake forms that need to be completed, mental health history and goal setting. A typical session for an adult can look like updating their therapist on any challenges or life milestones since last being seen, the therapist using guided questions, suggesting coping tools and interventions to help facilitate the processing of emotions and thoughts.
A typical session for a child can look like using play or creative modalities along with talking to express feelings and thoughts in an age-appropriate way. This can include skill building, problem solving and has very little pressure.
