Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is offered by registered psychotherapists and is a creative therapy that helps people reconnect with themselves through the language of the body. It’s grounded in the well-established understanding that our thoughts, emotions, and physical experiences are deeply interconnected, meaning shifts in movement can influence our emotional world, and emotional shifts can reshape the way we move and feel in our bodies. It can be used to help individuals, families and groups address many issues such as supporting healing around grief, stress, self-esteem, body image, communication and relationships and much more.

In DMT, you’re invited to gently notice your own patterns, how you hold tension, how you expand or contract, how you approach, pause, or pull back and explore what those patterns might be saying about your needs, boundaries, and feelings. Through embodied exploration and creative movement, DMT can offer access to unconscious material, expand awareness of your felt senses, and deepen your understanding of your internal world.

Initial sessions can focus on getting to know a client, any intake forms that need to be completed, mental health history and goal setting. No dance experience is required. Sessions might include simple movement, breath work, mirroring, structured activities, or creative improvisation, always tailored to your comfort level and goals.

Sessions for both children and adults focuses on how your body speaks, the stories it holds, the patterns it repeats and the ways it meets or pulls away from the world around you. When this awareness grows, healing often finds its own direction. The therapist may dance with you, talk or be silent during your creative process to facilitate a safe atmosphere.
